Don't Sweat The Small Stuff

I've always found this to be a great mantra
to follow from day to day to help
keep everything in perspective
...because,
no matter how overwhelming things seem
...there's always
bigger shit around the corner.
So, instead of letting the little stuff get to you,
it's best to conserve your energy for
the big one!

I've had to apply this to my gardening as well.
I have too many and not enough time to
stay on top of things to keep
them looking good.
We gave the gardens a good pruning, weeding and edging
in the early spring, but already, things are out growing their space
...and the weeds!!!
I spent a couple of hours last night weeding some of the gardens,
pulling only the weeds six inches or taller,
not worrying about getting the little ones
...they can wait for another day.

Pond Watch

Water is the driver of nature.
~Leonardo da Vinci~

"The upholder of the cycles which sustain all Life is water. In every drop of water dwells a deity whom indeed we all serve. There also dwells Life, the soul of the primal substance - water - whose boundaries and banks are the capillaries that guide it, and in which it circulates. Every pulse beat arising through the interaction of will and resistance is indicative of creative work and urges us to care for those vessels, those primary and most vital structures, in which throbs the product of a dualistic power - Life"
Viktor Schauberger

There is something about water that has a drawing force compelling me to stop,
if only for a moment, to rest and meditate
....to muse about things past and present,
or to contemplate the future.
It doesn't have to be a sparkling pristine stream,
a babbling brook,
or a vast ocean of waves or tides to reel me in.
It can be a pool of water trapped between rocks after a summer rain,
or a scum covered pond dancing with insects
...food for what lies hidden beneath its surface.
There is something quieting and mysterious about a pond
...often stagnant, murky, and unimposing
... that makes one stop
and
watch
and listen.

This Is The Precious Present

If you feel like you're being watched...
 chances are...
you probably are.

"This is the precious present, regardless of what yesterday
was like, regardless of what tomorrow may bring. When your
inner eyes open, you can find immense beauty hidden within the
inconsequential details of daily life. When your inner ears open,
you can hear the subtle, lovely music of the universe everywhere
you go. When the heart of your heart opens, you can take deep
pleasure in the company of the people around you -- family, friends,
acquaintances, or strangers -- including those whose characters are
less than perfect, just as your character is less than perfect. When you
are open to the beauty, mystery, and grandeur of ordinary existence,
you "get it" that it always has been beautiful, mysterious,
and grand and always will be. This is the precious present."
~Timothy Ray Miller~

ON LIFE

"A little while and I will be gone from among you, whither I cannot tell. From nowhere we came, and into nowhere we go. What is life? It is as a flash of a firefly in the night. It is as the breath of a buffalo in the winter time. It is as the little shadow that runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset." - Crowfoot, chief of the Blackfoot Indians (1890)

For this weeks Sunday Cirar I have chosen a quote that appeared in the obituary of an elderly neighbor who passed away this week. Hugh was a retired school teacher, a poet, a lover of nature and a real "gentleman." He moved away a few years ago, but while he lived here he would always stop to chat with my husband whenever he saw him outside while on his daily walks. He loved to talk about birds and other things of nature that he witnessed on his many walks through the orchards and woods, and they were the subject of most of his wonderful poetry.

We last saw Hugh while shopping last winter when he told us he was diagnosed with lung cancer...although he never smoked in his life.

I loved his choice of a quote because I know it reflected his love of nature and his outlook on life. I chose the above picture because it is the view he would have seen many times over throughout the years on his beloved walks.
